Things We Do As We Start School: North Carolina, USA

Our friends at Summit Charter School in North Carolina, USA sent us a message telling us about things they do as they start school:
- school supplies
- packing backpacks
- getting ready for school
- school day
Here is the message:

"Dear 1st Grade Class,

Hello! We are Mrs. Hughes' 1st Grade Tech class at Summit Charter School in North Carolina, USA. We are excited to be ePals with you this year. For our first correspondence we worked on drawing pictures in paint and then we put them in a powerpoint so you could see "What we do to get ready for school".

We started school in August. Before school starts we have Book Day which is when we bring in all of our supplies and get our books. We have to bring in things like tissues, wipes, folders, and other supplies.

Once we start school we have things that we have to do to get ready for school...like dress in dress code. We have to wear shirts in white, green, navy, or yellow and our bottoms have to be khaki or navy.

We also have to pack our backpacks with things for school...like our books, learning logs and green folders. Our learning log is where the teacher puts things that we need at home and our parents have to sign it every night.

We have to pack our lunches to bring to school because we do not have a cafeteria at school. We also bring a snack and a water bottle every day.

Then we have to drive to school with our parents because we do not have buses to pick us up like other schools in the USA.

A traditional function in Makassed celebrating the Independence Day on the 22nd of November is to have a running competition for the secondary students and art competition for the elementary students to win the cups of the late Saeb Salam one of the prominent leaders in Lebanon struggling for independence. The running competition started yesterday at his statue and ended at the Salam's residence in Mousaitbeh where the president of Makassed, Mr. Amine Daouk, and the participants were met by the MP of Beirut, Mr. Tammam Salam...

Our Makassed Association Logo

Today we had an interesting activity in our class! We had brilliant ideas through brainstorming our "Makassed Logo" because the concept was so intimate to us. Then we used the words that we came up with to discuss what our Makassed Association means to us and the details of the motto especially the Quran verse:

وقل ربي زدني علماً

which means "Lord, increase me in knowledge" and this increase should continue forever...so we have to cherish more and more learning.

After that we we drew the logo and each one of us gave his own caption.

We wish our Makassed another great and fulfilling year ahead!

World Environment Day: A Shared Story With Hatton Vale State School, Australia

June 5 is "World Environment Day." This day was instituted by the United Nations to stimulated worldwide awareness of the environment. A day to promote caring for our planet, Earth. World Environment Day is celebrated around the world with street rallies, bicycle parades, green concerts, essay and poster competitions in schools, tree planting, recycling efforts, clean-up campaigns and much more.

We, second graders, have celebrated this day through a collaborative project with our friends at Hatton Vale State School in Queensland, Australia. We decided to write a story together, so we took turns with each class writing a part alternate weeks. It was a new experience and the excitement grew as we eagerly awaited the moment that we could all read our Aussie friends' parts.

The Earth Day Groceries Project is an environmental awareness project. It's managed online by Mr. Mark Ahlness at Arbor Heights Elementary School in Seattle, Washington. This is the eighteenth year this project has been coordinated on the internet. Hundreds of schools have participated from High Schools to Kindergarten classes. We, too, have participated and borrowed paper grocery bags from local grocery stores. Then, we decorated them in the classroom with pictures of the Earth and wrote our environmental messages. Finally, we returned the decorated grocery bags to the stores. The stores then distributed these bags to shoppers on Earth Day. It was really a good way to get involved in our community and spread these messages out. We think we did something with pictures and words...

Our friends at Leipzig International School in Germany have sent us a message telling us that they've watched the video we made for them and they had a go at saying the Arabic. They'll make a short video of it for us soon! They also told us that they just adored seeing us watch their video in the classroom and they especially LOVED the bit at the end about Miss Martini being gorgeous. It is now a well used phrase in their classroom.

Here is a video our German friends have posted on our "Lunch Box" wiki page to answer our questions. We're so excited that they're going to try 'hummus' and 'labne' tomorrow.

It was great to have the dentist, Dr. Zahra Kabbani Adra and her assistant visit our classroom today to tell us about the importance of brushing our teeth the right way, eating healthy food, and visiting the dentist regularly for check-ups.

Dr. Adra first dressed for us so that we can see how she looks like if we visited her at her clinic. She put on her beautiful purple costume and a funny mask. She emphasized the importance of regular teeth brushing and flossing through an interactive discussion, a power point presentation, and three videos. We got a booklet to remind us of how to take care of our teeth, toothpaste, and dental health worksheets.

For us, a visit to the dentist is a very stressful experience...but now, we can accept the new adventure because we know what to expect and understand the reason for that. We have lots to tell our family about what we had seen.

Thank you Doctor for sharing about your job and making the visit fun! Very Much Appreciated!

It's interesting to learn that there's a special festival for girls called "Hina Matsuri", or Doll Festival, which is celebrated on March 3rd in Japan. Give Us a Smile!

February is the "Dental Health Month". It will be a month full of activities where the emphasis is on taking care of our teeth.

"The Tooth Tally Project" is a fun ICT learning project...250 classes from around the world have joined in and are counting lost teeth. For the next three months, we'll be keeping track of our lost and wiggly teeth as well as doing other interesting activities.

As a start, we plotted our school location on the mapfaire website and then updated our class page on the "Tooth Tally" wiki and described our school.

We've been recently involved in an interesting project, "The Lunch Box", an international language and cultural awareness project. The main goal is to use the second language for an authentic purpose and to become aware of the similarities and differences between cultures. There are five stages in this project and the activities in each stage are going to be completed by a certain date.

Dicto- Comp Dictation is an effective exercise and a learning activity. We applied phonics skills and practiced the integrative use of listening and writing skills.

Here are the steps we followed:

1. First, we listened to the poem several times.

2. Next, we read the poem slowly and acted it out.

3. We listened to the poem and all the students tried to act it out.

5. Teacher pantomimed the poem and we wrote one sentence for each action.

6. Peer- Correction

Dictogloss Dictation

Dictogloss Technique is a classic activity where we are required to reconstruct a text by listening and noting down key words which are then used as a base for reconstruction. We practice listening, reading, writing and speaking by working in cooperative groups and use the vocabulary we have already learned (body parts, fruit, and vegetables) in order to complete the text and make up our own poems.

Our dear friends at Sunset Elementary School have created a beautiful slideshow about gingerbread houses. They had learned that gingerbread houses and cookies that they use to decorate with at Christmas come from Germany. They also read several gingerbread man stories, including all the great ones from Jan Brett. The gingerbread houses were their wrap up activity.

Hot Spots

Through iEarn website, an International Education and Resource Network, we got the chance to meet Ms. Edna Pythan, the Global Connections Liaison Highland Park ISD in Dallas, TX, USA, who has an interesting project about "Community Hot Spots". The partnership includes 12 classess from Dallas, TX, USA, four from Madrid, Spain, and our school.
Students took pictures of their favorite spots in their community and created a "Hot Spots" project on Voicethread. Then, they uploaded these pictures on Voicethread and talked about why these places are their "hot spots" and why they are an important part of their community. Then teachers will create a Wiki to host a discussion about their community and share that wiki with partner schools so they too can post Voicethreads, as well as view and comment on student videos.

Outcomes:

- Students will identify their favorite places in their own community and investigate why it is an important part of their community.

- Students create a Voicethread that clearly communicates their favorite places in their community and why it is an important part of their community.

- Students will analyze voice threads of other students to find similarities and differences in that particular community and their own.

Children's Day in Bangkok, Thailand

We have new friends from Udomsuksa School, Bangkok, Thailand. Udomsuksa School is a Thai Private School with an English Prgram following the curriculum specified by the Ministry of Education. This school is existing for more than 35 years already. It's a big school with 4,000 students enrolled from Nursery to Grade 12. Ms. Sally Medina shared with us "Children's Day Around the World" project on the eLanguages website and our friends told us how this special day is celebrated in their country.

"Children's Day in Thailand falls every 2nd Saturday in January no matter what date it falls. Government offices and different organizations conduct different activities for the children on this day. The Prime Minister's office is opened and allow children to experience sitting on the Prime Minister's chair and act like a real minister.Children will be interviewed how they feel sitting on the prime minister's chair. Military bases are opened also to let children try to be on a plane and let them survey the inside of it. Most parents bring their children to different places like zoo, parks and shopping malls. School conduct simple activities for their pupils and students a day before the real Children's Day."

We are ePals, the community-wide collaboration, has focused on how we say "HELLO" in different languages. Now, they'd like to have a sample to include on the ePals page, as a demonstration for others to see:

- 1 minute video showing how we read in our environment. For this reason, we, first graders, took a short trip around our school building to find labels and signs to read and made a video showing the way we read around us in Arabic, our native language, and then translate it to English.

It's a very big surprise! We're so excited to meet Oscar's twin brother, Lucky.

Lucky intends to stay the whole school year with us because Oscar has told him that he really enjoyed listening to our stories and having fun with all of us. He will help us improve our reading and writing skills.

Lucky, this adorable bear, comes with his bag packed with his favorite toys, clothes, a bar of soap, a blanket, a toothbrush, toothpaste, his best bedtime story, a photo album and a diary. Every day, we're going to pull one of our names from an envelope and the lucky student gets to take our Teddy Bear home with him. Lucky will go home with his bag and with the help of our parents, we'll write down in his diary all of our adventures and take pictures with him.

We eagerly wait our turn for a day with Lucky...we promise to make you very happy and take good care of you.
